Healthcare allowance
Zorgtoeslag can be affected if relevant assets exceed the applicable limit.
An investment can become part of your overall assets. That can eventually matter for Dutch tax and some means-tested benefits. It may not matter when you're starting small — but it's worth understanding as your wealth grows.
Your investments may form part of your overall assets. Over time, if your total wealth reaches certain thresholds, this could affect things like taxes, benefits or other means-tested arrangements.
For someone starting with a smaller investment, this may have little or no immediate impact. But as your investments — and other assets — grow, it's worth keeping an eye on.
And in a way, that's a good milestone to reach: your wealth has grown enough to matter. ✦Dutch income tax has a category for income from savings and investments known as Box 3. Shares and other investments can count as assets for this purpose, together with other relevant assets and debts.
For 2026, the general Box 3 tax-free allowance is €59,357 per person, or €118,714 with a fiscal partner. The tax is not simply 36% of everything above that amount: the Box 3 calculation uses rules for the taxable return and asset categories.

For Dutch means-tested arrangements, savings and investments can sometimes count toward an asset test. The applicable limit depends on the benefit and your household situation.

Huurtoeslag has asset rules, and the assets of certain household members can also matter.
Kindgebonden budget also has an asset threshold. The applicable amount differs from the Box 3 tax-free allowance.
Dutch tax authorities state there is no maximum asset limit for kinderopvangtoeslag.
When an investment belongs to a child under 18, Dutch rules can attribute a child's assets to a parent for certain tax and benefit calculations. The exact treatment depends on the arrangement and family situation.
This is particularly relevant to Vestivy because a small investment gift can be the beginning of a much larger balance built through birthdays, recurring contributions and long-term growth.
Tax rules, thresholds and eligibility requirements can change over time. The information on this page is general educational information and is not personal tax, legal or financial advice.
Vestivy does not determine your tax position or eligibility for benefits. If the amounts become meaningful for your financial situation, check the latest rules with the Dutch tax authorities or speak with a qualified adviser.
That's a milestone worth being prepared for.
